Maximum Short Quantity in Japanese and Finnish in Two Perception Tests with F0 and dB variants
نویسنده
چکیده
Maximum short segments of quantity in 120 discrimination tests at the word level were compared between twoand three-choice alternatives and with production test results utilising the same syllable structures. The materials in the perception test were eight kinds of bisyllabic synthetic nonsense words with five different prosodic patterns. These structures were used in the production test. 28 Finnish and Japanese subjects participated in the two perception tests and three speakers of each language in the production test. The results showed that (1) the short vowels/consonants in the two perception tests were longer than in the production tests; (2) the word-structural differences had more effect than the prosodic conditional differences in both Finnish and Japanese in both tests; (3) the short segmental durations were shorter in Finnish in the three choices than in the two choices but the Japanese counterparts were the reverse; (4) there was a correlation in some cases between perception and production.

متن کاملPerception of Japanese quantity by Swedish speaking learners: A preliminary analysis
Swedish learners’ perception of Japanese quantity was investigated by means of an identification task. Swedish informants performed similarly to native Japanese listeners in short/long identification of both vowel and consonant. The Swedish and Japanese listeners reacted similarly both to the durational variation and to the F0 change despite the different use of F0 fall in relation with quantit...
متن کاملDichotomy or Trichotomy? Testing the Perceptual Boundary of Quantity between Japanese and Finnish
The results of two kinds of perception test on the perceptual boundary ranges of quantity distinctions between Japanese and Finnish were compared. Test A was conducted based on the trichotomy concept, choosing one from short, long and uncertain. Test B, based on the dichotomy concept, was conducted by choosing either short or long, utilising the same test words. The materials were 120 discrimin...
متن کاملDurational Variability of Vowel Quantity Boundary for Japanese, Finnish and Czech Speakers in Perception
The discrimination tests were conducted at the word level to study the durational variability of vowel quantity boundary in perception, utilising disyllabic synthetic nonsense words. Four kinds of word structures and five kinds of pitch and intensity variance patterns were used. The number of the tests became 60. 21 Japanese, Finnish and Czech speakers participated in these tests as the subject...
متن کاملPerception of Foreign Accentedness in L2 Prosody and Segments: L1 Japanese Speakers Learning L2 French
In order to examine the production of Japanese-speaking L2 learners of French, a series of perception tests were conducted with 17 native speakers of French (from mainland France). The subjects listened to French short phrases 1) synthesized with Mbrola using (European standard and Canadian) French and Japanese segments, combined with duration and F0 found in the recording of phrases read by Ja...
